A man who has worked at the same factory for approximately 30 years recently expressed his views regarding a contentious debate that has developed between union workers and management. The company is located outside California, and workers say they believe the community will support their recent decision to go on strike. The company itself has also issued a public statement regarding the contract disputes.
The workers voted on a recent Monday, determining that a strike is the only way to resolve their current contract problems. The average contract between union workers and this particular company lasts three to five years. Their most recent contract was an agreement covering four years; however, that expired in March 2016, and no successful negotiations for a new contract have yet been achieved.
The workers say they are fighting for their jobs. The main concerns which have led to the strike reportedly pertain to benefits, starting wages and pensions. A spokesperson for the workers noted that there has not been a strike at the company since the 1970s.
A management representative released a statement saying the company desires an amicable agreement, but is also greatly concerned with continuing to provide quality jobs with competitive compensations. The company also stated that it has a plan in place to continue production during the ongoing strike.
