There’s a certain section of sidewalk in a small town in a state beyond California that is proving quite difficult for pedestrians to navigate. The reason is that a construction project was begun on the sidewalk, but never finished. Believe it or not, contract disputes are the causal factor behind this peculiar situation.
Several months ago, construction workers were assigned to the sidewalk improvement project. However, sometime in January, all the workers walked off the job before it was completed. The pavement was left uneven, and various construction equipment and barriers were left on site as well.
A local merchant expressed great frustration, saying the situation has ruined local business. The city awarded the nearly $1 million project to a particular construction company. A time-line for completed work was set at nine months. That was more than a year ago. A city manager said the focal point of the contract disagreement has to do with project change orders.
Representatives from both sides of the issue say their teams are looking forward to resolving the matter in the near future. In the meantime, many tourists to the area have reportedly been aghast at the unsightly mess the unfinished sidewalk project has created in town. If a pedestrian were to trip and fall in a hole or other cluttered part of the area, it could open up a whole new set of problems.
