Intellectual property violations can take a few different forms. Maybe it is a patent violation where another company is selling products that your company owns the rights to. Maybe it is a trademark violation where they are using your logo or other identifying features to try to trick consumers into thinking they’re purchasing authentic products from your company, when they are actually purchasing knockoff products.
This can certainly harm your bottom line. For every customer that buys a fake product, you’re potentially losing a sale that you otherwise would have made. But because the customers themselves may not know that this is what’s happening, it can also harm your company’s reputation.
Inferior products
Part of the problem is that knockoff products are often inferior to the originals. The other company is just trying to make them as cheap as possible in order to get quick sales based off of your intellectual property and your brand’s reputation.
But if a consumer doesn’t realize that they’ve bought a knockoff product, and that product is also far worse than what they would get if they actually purchased from you, they may leave negative reviews or simply feel that they’ve had a negative experience with your company. They won’t buy from you again and they wouldn’t recommend you to anyone else, even though they never actually interacted with one of your products.
In addition, some brands become famous for being frequently copied. People will be wary of buying even authentic products, which can cost you even more sales.
This is why it’s so important to take quick action against IP violations. If you’re going through litigation, be sure you know what legal options you have.
